Buzzers in Vancouver student rentals: one Enterphone, four students
A Vancouver student rental usually has one Enterphone number for the whole suite, and it often belongs to whoever signed first. Numbers from another province or country may not ring at all. BuzzMeBro gives the suite one local Greater Vancouver number that rings up to 4 phones at once, so the building is asked once and roommates swap in and out each term without another form.
You share a two bedroom off Commercial Drive with three other students. Your friend is in the lobby with a pizza. The Enterphone rings the roommate who moved in first, and she is in a lab on the other side of the city.
Student suites near UBC, SFU, Langara, BCIT, Douglas, Capilano and Emily Carr run into this every September. The panel works fine. It was never set up for four people and a turnover every term.
Why does the buzzer never reach a student phone number?
Most students arrive with the number they already had. That might be a 416 from Toronto, a 403 from Calgary, or a number from another country.
Many lobby panels dial out on a building line that is only allowed to make local calls. Greater Vancouver is one local calling area, and 604, 778, 236 and 672 numbers are all local inside it. A number from outside it may simply not complete, and nothing in the lobby says why.
Some buildings dial further than that. One downtown Vancouver strata tells residents its system can dial any Canadian or US number, and that it does not work for other countries. So an international number can fail even in a building that would happily call Toronto.
Which campus areas does this affect?
Any apartment building with a lobby panel, near any campus. The table lists each main campus as the school describes it on its own website.
| School | Campus |
|---|---|
| UBC | Vancouver campus, with Point Grey the closest neighbourhood |
| SFU | Burnaby Mountain, plus campuses in Surrey and downtown Vancouver |
| Langara | 100 West 49th Avenue, Vancouver |
| BCIT | Willingdon Avenue and Canada Way, Burnaby |
| Douglas | New Westminster and Coquitlam |
| Capilano | Purcell Way, North Vancouver |
UBC Student Housing describes East Vancouver, with Main Street, Commercial Drive and Mount Pleasant, as a popular choice for students. SFU says its Burnaby campus is flanked by UniverCity, a residential community. Those are all places with apartment buildings and lobby panels.
One thing differs by housing type. UBC Student Housing notes that Point Grey has basement suites, apartments, laneway houses and whole houses for groups of roommates. A basement suite or a shared house often has its own front door and no lobby panel at all. This post is about the buildings that do have one.
One number, four students
The Enterphone stores one phone number per suite. A visitor scrolls to your name or keys in your code, and the panel calls that one number. There is no second field for a roommate.
Where a building offers a second number at all, it is a rollover. It rings only after the first number rings out, typically 20 to 30 seconds later. A delivery driver has usually left by then.
| What you do | Why it stops working |
|---|---|
| One roommate mobile on the panel | That person is in class, at work or asleep |
| Forward that phone to someone else | Forwarding moves the call to one phone, it does not add one |
| Text the group chat and run downstairs | Somebody has to be home, and it is the same person every time |
| A number that rings every phone in the suite | Whoever is free answers, which is the point |
The roommate version of this, in more detail.
Who do you ask to change the Enterphone number?
Nobody in the suite can edit the panel. The change goes through whoever runs the building, and the right person depends on whose name is on which agreement.
| Your situation | Who to ask |
|---|---|
| You rent a condo suite from its owner | Your landlord, who passes it to the strata manager |
| You rent in a purpose-built rental building | The property manager or building manager |
| You rent a room from a roommate who holds the lease | That roommate, who holds the agreement with the landlord |
| You rent a room in the home of the owner | The owner directly |
The last two rows matter for students. The BC government says that if a roommate has an agreement with another tenant but not the landlord, they cannot resolve disputes with the landlord through the Residential Tenancy Branch, because there is no contract between them. It also says the Residential Tenancy Act does not apply where a tenant shares a bathroom or kitchen with the owner. In both cases, ask the person you actually pay.
Many BC buildings handle the change with a short form. Here is what to write in each box of the Enterphone request form. If your building wants an email instead, the free buzzer number change message writes it for you, addressed to a landlord, a building manager or a portal.
If you live alone and the panel only has an old number on it, you do not need to buy anything. Send that email with your own local mobile, buzz yourself once to test it, and you are done.
What happens when roommates change every term?
Student suites turn over fast. Someone leaves after one term, someone else arrives for the next, a friend takes the room for the summer.
If the panel points at one person, every change means another form, another email and another wait. The worst case is the panel still ringing someone who left in April. What to do when a roommate moves out.
If the panel points at a number that belongs to the suite, the phones behind it change without the building hearing about it. The Enterphone keeps calling the same number all year.
How does BuzzMeBro work in a student suite?
- Get a local number for the suite BuzzMeBro checks your postal code for a number inside the local calling area of your building. New Vancouver numbers are 236, 778 or 672. If none is available for your address, signup says so before it takes a card and offers a waitlist.
- Add every roommate Up to 4 phones. Each person confirms their own number by text first, so nobody is put on the buzzer without agreeing.
- Send the building one request Give the strata manager, property manager or landlord your suite number and the new number in full, with the area code.
- Test it from the lobby Buzz your suite. Every phone should ring. Answer on one and press the door digit your building uses. One downtown Vancouver strata uses 6, so ask rather than assume 9.
BuzzMeBro is $9.99 a month or $95.00 a year, billed per suite rather than per person, so splitting it four ways is simple. A buzz arrives as an ordinary phone call, so nobody installs anything.
Customer data is never sold and never used to train AI, as the privacy policy commits. For the wider city picture, read the Vancouver apartment buzzer guide or browse all Vancouver buzzer guides. When your suite is ready, check availability for your building with BuzzMeBro.
Questions people ask
Why does my Vancouver buzzer not ring my phone from home?
Many lobby panels can only dial local numbers, and Greater Vancouver numbers are 604, 778, 236 and 672. A number from another province or country may never connect. The free buzzer number check on the BuzzMeBro site tells you from your postal code and the first six digits.
I rent a room from the roommate on the lease. Can I ask the building myself?
Ask that roommate. The BC government says a roommate with an agreement with another tenant, but not the landlord, has no contract with the landlord. So the request goes through the roommate on the lease, who passes it to the landlord or building.
Can two students put their numbers on one Enterphone suite?
Not as two phones ringing together. The panel holds one number per suite, and any second number is a rollover that rings only after the first rings out. One number that rings every phone, like a BuzzMeBro number, is how a whole suite gets the buzz.
Does a 778 or 236 number work on a Vancouver Enterphone?
Yes, where the panel dials out. Greater Vancouver is one local calling area and 604, 778, 236 and 672 are all local calls inside it, so the area code alone is not the problem. A number from outside the area is, and 778, 236 and 672 are also used elsewhere in BC, so a 778 from Kelowna is long distance.
What happens when a roommate leaves at the end of term?
With a BuzzMeBro number on the panel, you remove their phone and add the new roommate on the BuzzMeBro website. The Enterphone keeps calling the same number, so nobody files another form with the building.
