Your buzzer goes straight to voicemail: how to fix it

· 5 min read · BuzzMeBro

A buzzer going straight to voicemail usually means your phone never rang. The five common causes are carrier spam filtering blocking the building number, Do Not Disturb or Focus modes, the building line showing as an unknown or blocked caller, a stale number in the lobby directory, and no signal where you keep your phone. Check them in that order.

Someone is at your door. Your phone does not ring. They call you and say it went to voicemail. You have no idea why, and neither does the building.

Work through these in order. The first two account for most cases.

1. Your carrier is filtering the building as spam

This is the common one, and it has got worse every year. A lobby panel calls a lot of different numbers, for a few seconds each, from a line nobody ever calls back. That is the exact signature of a robocaller, and carrier spam systems act on it.

When it triggers, the call is silently sent to voicemail or blocked outright. Nothing on your phone tells you it happened.

  • Get the building number. Ask your property manager which number the entry panel calls out from. They will usually know or can get it from their phone provider.
  • Save it as a contact. Name it something obvious like Lobby Buzzer. A number in your contacts is treated as trusted by most spam filters and by Do Not Disturb.
  • Check your carrier app. Most carriers have a call-filtering setting and a blocked list. Look for the building number in it.
  • Check for a third-party blocker. If you installed a call-screening app, it has its own list.

2. Do Not Disturb, Focus, or a silence-unknown-callers setting

iPhones have a Silence Unknown Callers setting that sends every number not in your contacts straight to voicemail. Android has equivalents. Both are off by default and both get switched on by people who are tired of spam.

If that setting is on and the building is not in your contacts, your buzzer will never ring again and nothing will tell you.

3. The building is calling as blocked or unknown

Some entry panels are configured to withhold caller ID, or sit behind a building phone system that presents no number at all.

You cannot add a blank caller to your contacts, so the spam and unknown-caller fixes above do not help. Ask the property manager whether the panel can present the building main number. Many can, and most have simply never been asked.

4. The directory has the wrong number

If the panel is dialling a number that is disconnected or belongs to someone else, you will never get the call, and it will look like voicemail to whoever is downstairs.

Test it: go to the lobby and press your own unit. If your phone does not ring while you are standing there, the stored number is wrong. How to get it changed. If it rings someone else, that is a different problem.

5. No signal where the phone lives

Worth ruling out last, because it is easy to check and occasionally the answer. If your phone sits in a corner of the apartment with no bars, or on wifi calling with a flaky router, calls go to voicemail without ringing.

If it keeps happening to one person

Spam filtering is per phone and per carrier, so a buzzer can work perfectly for your roommate and fail for you all month. That is a strong hint that the problem is on the phone rather than at the panel.

It is also the best argument there is for not letting one phone be the only way into your apartment. A filtered call on one handset is a locked door; a filtered call on one of 4 is an inconvenience nobody notices. That is what BuzzMeBro does, and it is the reason spam filtering stops being an emergency. The other ways to get more than one phone on the buzzer.

Questions people ask

Why did my buzzer suddenly start going to voicemail?

Most often a carrier spam-filtering update, or Silence Unknown Callers being turned on. Both change behaviour with no warning and no notification, which is why it feels sudden.

How do I find the number my building buzzer calls from?

Ask your property manager or superintendent. If they do not know, it will be on the building phone bill for the entry panel line. Some panels also show it if you call your own unit from the lobby and check your recent calls.

Does this happen with landlines too?

Much less. Spam filtering is mostly a mobile-network feature, which is one reason older buildings assumed every suite had a fixed line in it. That is not a reason to get one; it is the reason this problem is newer than the buildings are.

Can the building stop their buzzer being marked as spam?

To a degree. Registering the line properly with their phone provider and making sure it presents caller ID both help. It is worth raising with the property manager, because if it is happening to you it is happening to other units.
