Apartment buzzer not ringing your Android phone: the settings to check on Pixel and Samsung

· 11 min read · BuzzMeBro

An apartment buzzer that never rings an Android phone is often stopped by a phone setting, not the panel. On a Pixel or Samsung Galaxy, check Do Not Disturb and any mode or routine such as Bedtime or Sleep, call forwarding, blocking of unknown or private numbers, and which SIM the panel number belongs to. BuzzMeBro rings every roommate at once, so one silenced phone does not lock everyone out.

A courier texts from the lobby: buzzed you three times. Your Pixel or Galaxy was on the counter. No ring, no buzz, maybe a missed call later, maybe nothing.

If your phone showed a spam warning, or the call landed in a spam folder, read building buzzer marked as spam first. That guide covers the spam label, Not spam, the block list and Call Screen. This one covers everything else on an Android phone that can keep a buzz quiet.

Why does the buzzer ring my roommate but not my Android phone?

Every setting below lives on one phone. Your roommate can have Do Not Disturb off and no forwarding, while your phone has Bedtime mode on a schedule. Same panel, same number, different result.

So start with your own phone. Menu names below come from Google and Samsung help pages. Both companies say screens can vary by phone model, software version and carrier, so yours may read slightly differently.

Is Do Not Disturb or a mode silencing the buzzer on a Pixel?

This is a common cause. On a Pixel, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Modes, and check that Do Not Disturb is off. Then look at the other modes. Bedtime and Driving are modes too, and they can turn on by themselves.

  • Bedtime. Open Settings, tap Modes, then Bedtime. Google says Bedtime can run on a schedule, a custom schedule, or turn on while charging. A phone that charges on the kitchen counter in the evening can go quiet hours before you go to bed.
  • Who can interrupt. Open Settings, tap Modes, pick a mode, then under Notification filters look at People. That is where calls are blocked or allowed. Make sure calls from the lobby contact get through in every mode you use.
  • Repeat callers. In the same place, Allow repeat callers lets a call through if the same number calls twice in 15 minutes. A visitor who buzzes twice might get through. Do not rely on it.
  • Flip to Shhh. On a Pixel 4a or later, a phone lying face down can silence incoming calls. Check it under Settings, System, Gestures, Flip to Shhh.

Is a Samsung mode or routine silencing the buzzer?

Samsung Galaxy phones have Do not disturb, and they also have Modes and Routines, which can switch Do not disturb on for you. That second part is what catches people out.

Do not disturb and its exceptions

Samsung Canada gives the path as Settings, Notifications, Do not disturb. Check whether it is on. To keep it on and still get the buzz, Samsung says to touch and hold the Do not disturb icon in the Quick settings panel, go to Allowed during Do not disturb, and set Calls and messages to allow the contacts you want, as well as repeat callers.

Sleep and other modes

Open Settings, then Modes and Routines. Samsung says a mode can be set up to enable options like Do not disturb. So a Sleep mode, a Work mode or a Game mode can silence calls on its own schedule, even when the Do not disturb switch looked off the last time you checked.

To see what is running right now, Samsung says an active mode such as Sleep mode shows in the Now bar on the lock screen. Open each mode you use and allow the lobby contact in its Do not disturb settings, or take Do not disturb out of that mode.

Routines you forgot you made

Samsung puts it plainly: if a feature suddenly becomes restricted, it may be caused by a routine you set earlier. Open Modes and Routines, tap Routines, and check which ones are running. If a routine changes your sound or Do not disturb settings, it can silence the buzzer too.

One more Galaxy check. Under Settings, Sound and vibration, Samsung lists three sound modes. Mute disables sound and vibration for calls. The call still arrives, but you will not notice it.

Is call forwarding sending the buzz somewhere else?

Forwarding is easy to set once and forget. If Always forward is on, your carrier sends every call, buzzes included, to another number before your phone rings. That might be an old work phone, a number from a trip, or your voicemail.

  • Samsung Galaxy. Open the Phone app, tap More options (the three dots), tap Settings, then Supplementary services, then Call forwarding. Samsung lists four options: Always forward, Forward when busy, Forward when unanswered and Forward when unreachable. Bell notes that on some Samsung phones the menu is called More settings instead.
  • Pixel. Bell gives the path for the Pixel 6 to Pixel 8 as Phone, the menu icon, Settings, Calling accounts, your carrier, then Call forwarding. Open each option and turn off any you did not mean to set.

If you cannot find the screen, ask your carrier whether forwarding is on for your line. If you want to use forwarding on purpose to share the buzzer, read this first, because forwarding still leaves one phone in charge of the door.

Are you blocking unknown or private callers?

Some entry panels call out with no caller ID at all. If your phone blocks calls with no number, every buzz from that panel is blocked, and saving a contact cannot help, because there is no number to save.

  • Pixel and Phone by Google. Open the Phone app, tap More, Settings, Blocked numbers. If Unknown is on, Google says calls from private or unidentified numbers are blocked. Calls from numbers that are simply not in your contacts still come through.
  • Samsung Galaxy. Open the Phone app, tap the three dots, Settings, Block numbers. Samsung says Block calls from unknown numbers blocks calls from unknown or unspecified numbers.

Google also notes that calls from a number while it was blocked do not show in your call history. That is why a blocked buzzer leaves no trace. If you turn this setting off, ask your property manager whether the panel can send the building number as caller ID.

Could a second SIM be the reason the buzz never arrives?

Dual SIM phones carry two numbers. The lobby panel dials one of them, and only one. Three things go wrong here.

  1. The panel has the other number. If you gave the building the number of a SIM you have since turned off or removed, the buzz never reaches this phone. On a Pixel, check Settings, Network and internet, SIMs. On a Galaxy, check Settings, Connections, SIM manager.
  2. The default for calls is the wrong line. Both phones let you choose which SIM to use for calls. That setting picks the line you call out on, so if you called your property manager to set up the buzzer, they may have saved the number you called from. Check which number they actually stored.
  3. You are already on a call. Google says that on a Pixel 8 and earlier, calls to the other SIM go to voicemail while you are on a call. Samsung says the same for its dual SIM phones: while you talk on one card, the other cannot take a new call.

If you added a second SIM just for the buzzer, here is what it does and does not fix.

What if the buzz rings but the door will not open?

That is a different fault. If you can talk to the visitor but pressing the door digit does nothing, or the call drops when you press it, Wi-Fi calling is a common suspect. Samsung keeps the switch in the Phone app under Settings, Wi-Fi calling. How to test for it.

How do you test the fix?

  1. Save the lobby number If a buzz has ever reached you, the number is in your call history. Save it as a contact named Lobby Buzzer.
  2. Turn on the mode you use most Switch on Do Not Disturb, Bedtime or Sleep, the way it would be on a normal evening.
  3. Press your own unit Go to the lobby and buzz yourself. The phone should ring. If it does not, check forwarding and blocking next.
  4. Open the door once Answer and press the door digit your building uses. That proves the whole chain works, not just the ring.

On an iPhone the settings have different names. Apartment buzzer not ringing your iPhone covers them, and the voicemail checklist covers what happens upstream of the phone. More fixes are on the buzzer problems page.

Why does one quiet phone lock the whole apartment out?

If you live alone, the checks above are the whole fix. Turn off what you do not need, allow the lobby contact, test it, and you do not need to pay anyone.

With roommates or a partner it is different. The panel stores one number per unit. If that is your phone, every guest and courier depends on your modes, your forwarding and your SIM settings being right at that moment. One Sleep schedule and the apartment is locked out without anyone being told.

BuzzMeBro gives the apartment its own local number for the panel. A buzz rings up to 4 phones at the same time, and whoever answers first opens the door. One phone in Bedtime mode becomes a missed call nobody notices, not a courier walking away. Get your apartment number.

Questions people ask

Why does my Samsung not ring when the buzzer calls?

Check Do not disturb under Settings, Notifications, then check Modes and Routines for a mode or routine that turns it on. After that, look at call forwarding under Phone, Settings, Supplementary services, and at Block calls from unknown numbers under Phone, Settings, Block numbers.

Why does the buzzer go to voicemail on my Pixel?

Common causes are Do Not Disturb or a scheduled mode such as Bedtime, call forwarding left on, or being on a call on your other SIM. If the call was labelled spam or screened, that is a separate fix covered in the building buzzer marked as spam guide.

Does Allow repeat callers fix the buzzer?

Only sometimes. On a Pixel it lets a call through if the same number calls twice in 15 minutes. A visitor who buzzes once and leaves still will not reach you. Saving the lobby number as a contact and allowing that contact in every mode is the reliable fix.

Should I turn off blocking of unknown numbers?

If your building panel calls with no caller ID, yes, or every buzz will be blocked. On a Pixel, Unknown under Blocked numbers blocks only private or unidentified numbers, so callers who are simply not in your contacts still ring.

How do we stop one phone setting locking everyone out?

Have every buzz ring more than one phone. BuzzMeBro gives the apartment a local number for the panel and rings every registered phone at once, so if one phone is in Sleep mode or forwarding its calls, someone else still answers and opens the door.
