Apartment buzzer not ringing your iPhone: the settings that silence it
An apartment buzzer that never rings an iPhone is usually being screened by the phone itself. The lobby panel calls from a number that is not in your contacts, so Screen Unknown Callers, a Focus or the spam filter sends the buzz to voicemail with no ring. Save the panel number as a contact and allow it in every Focus. BuzzMeBro rings every roommate at once, so one silenced phone stops locking everyone out.
A visitor presses your unit in the lobby. Your iPhone stays dark. They call you later and say it went to voicemail, or they just leave.
Most of the time the panel did its job. It dialled your number and your carrier delivered the call. Then a setting on the phone decided the call was not worth a ring.
Why does an iPhone send the buzzer to voicemail?
A lobby panel calls out on the building phone line. That number is almost never in your contacts. To your iPhone, a buzz looks exactly like a call from a stranger, and several iOS features exist to keep strangers quiet.
These settings live on each phone separately. That is why the buzzer can ring your roommate every time and never ring you. If that is the pattern in your apartment, the problem is almost certainly on your phone, not in the panel.
Which iPhone settings silence the buzzer?
Check them in this order. The names and paths below are the ones Apple uses on current iOS.
Screen Unknown Callers set to Silence
Go to Settings, tap Apps, tap Phone, then scroll to Screen Unknown Callers. There are three choices: Never, Ask Reason for Calling and Silence.
With Silence, calls from numbers that are not saved in your contacts are silenced and sent to voicemail. This is the setting older guides call Silence Unknown Callers. In the Phone app it now sits inside Screen Unknown Callers. For a buzzer that is not saved as a contact, it means no ring, ever.
Ask Reason for Calling: a buzz becomes an interview
With Ask Reason for Calling, your iPhone answers an unknown number first and asks the caller for their name and reason before it rings you. That works for a person on a phone.
A buzz is different. Your visitor is standing at a speaker grille in a lobby, often with gloves on and a bag in each hand. Whether they hear the question and answer it before giving up depends on the panel and the person. Do not count on it. Saving the panel number as a contact skips the screening entirely, because it only applies to unsaved numbers.
Call Filtering for Unknown Callers hides the evidence
In the same Phone settings, scroll down to Call Filtering. If Unknown Callers is on, missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers are moved out of your recent calls and into a separate Unknown Callers list.
This is why some people swear the buzzer never called them. It did, and the record is in a list they never open. In the Phone app, tap the Filter button, then Unknown Callers, to see it. Apple also lets you tap Mark as Known next to a call there, so future calls from that number stay out of the list.
The spam filter acts on your carrier label
Also under Call Filtering is the spam filter. When it is on, calls your carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud are silenced, sent to voicemail and moved to the Spam list.
A lobby panel can be mislabelled, because it calls many different numbers for a few seconds each from a line nobody calls back. If the buzzer ever showed up on your screen with a spam warning, look in the Spam list for it. On an Android phone the same problem has different fixes: building buzzer marked as spam and buzzer not ringing on Android.
Focus and Do Not Disturb
A Focus silences calls from anyone you have not allowed, saved contact or not. Go to Settings, tap Focus, choose a Focus such as Do Not Disturb, Sleep, Personal or Work, then tap People. Under Allow Notifications From, add the buzzer contact.
Do this in every Focus you use, including any that turn on by schedule. With Share Across Devices on, a Focus started on your iPad or Mac can carry over to your phone. There is also an option to allow repeated calls, meaning two or more calls from the same number within three minutes. A visitor who buzzes twice might get through, but that is luck, not a fix.
Blocked Contacts and call identification apps
Open Settings, tap Apps, tap Phone, then Blocked Contacts. If the building number is there, someone blocked it after a confusing call. Tap Edit to unblock it.
Then tap Call Blocking & Identification. Any caller ID or call blocking app you installed is listed there. Those apps keep their own block lists, so open the app itself and check for the building number.
Silent mode: the call arrives and you just do not hear it
Silent mode is different from everything above. The call still comes in. Apple says that in Silent mode the iPhone does not ring, but it may still vibrate. If you find missed buzzes with no voicemail and no filtering, check the switch or the Action button.
Can your carrier block the buzzer before it reaches the phone?
It can label it, and sometimes stop it. Bell says its suspicious call detection is turned on for every Bell Mobility customer and cannot be turned off. It shows warnings such as Likely Fraud or Possible Spam, and it blocks some high-risk calls outright. Bell suggests adding important numbers to your contacts so they are recognized.
Rogers says Spam Call Detect is included in all Rogers Wireless plans with Name Display, and that it shows when a call could be fraud or spam.
A label alone does not silence anything. A label plus the iPhone spam filter does, and that pair is how a buzzer quietly lands in voicemail. On any carrier, look in your carrier app for a spam or screening feature, and check whether it keeps a list of numbers to always let through.
How do you stop your iPhone silencing the buzzer?
- Find the number the panel calls from Press your own unit at the lobby panel. If Screen Unknown Callers is on Silence, the call still shows in your recent calls. If Unknown Callers filtering is on, look in the Unknown Callers list. Other ways to find the number.
- Save it as a contact In the Phone app, tap the number in your calls list, then tap Create New Contact. Name it something obvious, like Lobby Buzzer.
- Allow it in every Focus Settings, Focus, pick each Focus, People, Allow Notifications From, then add Lobby Buzzer.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass if you want it louder than everything In Contacts, open Lobby Buzzer, tap Edit, tap Ringtone, then turn on Emergency Bypass. Apple says this lets sounds and vibrations from that contact through even when your iPhone or notifications are silenced.
- Test it from the lobby Press your unit again with a Focus on. Your phone should ring. Answer it and open the door once, so you know the whole chain works.
Which setting is it? A quick reference
| Setting | Where it lives | What it does to a buzz | The fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Unknown Callers: Silence | Settings, Apps, Phone | Voicemail, no ring | Save the panel as a contact |
| Screen Unknown Callers: Ask Reason for Calling | Settings, Apps, Phone | Your visitor is questioned before you hear a ring | Save the panel as a contact |
| Call Filtering: Unknown Callers | Settings, Apps, Phone | Missed buzzes moved to a hidden list | Save the contact, or Mark as Known |
| Call Filtering: spam filter | Settings, Apps, Phone | Voicemail if the carrier labels it spam | Save the contact, check the Spam list |
| Focus or Do Not Disturb | Settings, Focus, People | Silenced unless allowed | Add the contact to every Focus |
| Blocked Contacts or a blocking app | Settings, Apps, Phone | Never rings | Unblock the number |
What if none of these settings is on?
Then the problem is upstream of your phone. Press your unit from the lobby. If nothing arrives at all, not even a missed call, the panel may hold the wrong number or a number it cannot dial. The full list of causes in Toronto buildings covers both.
If the phone rings and you can talk, but the door will not open when you press the digit, that is a different fault. Wi-Fi calling can cause it. How to test for it.
Why is one iPhone a weak point for the whole apartment?
If you live alone, the steps above are the whole fix. Save the contact, allow it in your Focus settings, and you do not need to pay anyone anything.
With roommates it is different. The panel stores one number per unit. If that number is your iPhone, every guest, courier and roommate without keys depends on one phone, one set of settings and one person being awake. A new Focus schedule or one tap on Silence, and the whole apartment is locked out without anyone being told.
BuzzMeBro gives the apartment its own local number for the panel. A buzz rings up to 4 phones at the same time, and whoever answers first opens the door. One silenced iPhone becomes a missed call nobody notices, not a locked door. Get your apartment number, or browse other buzzer problems.
Questions people ask
Why does the buzzer ring my roommate but not my iPhone?
Screening, Focus and spam settings are set on each phone, so two phones can treat the same buzz differently. Check Screen Unknown Callers, Call Filtering and your Focus settings on the phone that stays silent, then save the panel number as a contact.
Does Silence Unknown Callers still exist on iPhone?
In the Phone app on current iOS it is part of Screen Unknown Callers, under Settings, Apps, Phone, where Silence is one of three choices. FaceTime still has a separate Silence Unknown Callers switch.
I saved the buzzer as a contact. Why is it still silent at night?
A Focus such as Sleep or Do Not Disturb silences saved contacts too. Go to Settings, Focus, choose the Focus, tap People and add the buzzer contact under Allow Notifications From. Repeat for every Focus you use.
Can I see buzzes my iPhone silenced?
Usually. Calls silenced by Screen Unknown Callers still appear in your recent calls. Calls caught by Unknown Callers filtering are in the Unknown Callers list, and carrier-labelled spam is in the Spam list. Both are under the Filter button in the Phone app.
What if only one of us can be on the buzzer?
That is the panel limit, one number per unit, and it is why a single silenced phone can lock everyone out. BuzzMeBro gives the apartment one number that rings every roommate at once, so a buzz still gets answered when one phone stays quiet.
